It has been said the Kentucky Derby is the most difficult horse race to handicap. It is a day where it is not always a good thing to be the favorite. It’s a good day for a sleeper.

In racing terminology, a sleeper is an under-rated horse, one who wins unexpectedly having previously shown poor form. This year, with the favorite scratched on Saturday morning and track conditions changing by the hour, betting on the sleeper might just pay a reward.

But be careful, the sleeper can sneak up on you.

The Derby Day Sleeper (an original cocktail recipe) – serves 2

  • 2 -1/2 oz. Malibu Passionfruit Rum
  • 1-1/2 oz. Rhythm liqueur
  • 1 oz. Amaretto
  • 5 oz. Orange Juice
  • Juice of 1 Lime

Shake well in a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Strain into two chilled martini glasses, garnish and serve.
